Outback Road Conditions - Road Reports
Northern Territory Road Conditions
NT Department of Planning and Infrastructure -- The whole website is dedicated to Northern Territory road reports. To navigate to the area you are looking for use text links or the map. Excellent, intuitive and informative site.
Kakadu National Park Road Conditions
Kakadu National Park road report -- (Does not necessarily contain the latest information and updates.) For more information about access to particular areas and walking tracks contact the Bowali Visitor Centre on 08 89381121.
Information about road conditions for other parks can be found on the NT DPI website above.
Western Australia Road Conditions
Main Roads Western Australia -- click on the map for the road reports for a specific region. You will find a (difficult to read) page that lists any alerts and warning for that region, and information on all the major Outback highways (open or closed). For more detailed information use the listed telephone numbers for the individual shires.
South Australia Road Conditions
Transport South Australia -- Outback Roads Temporary Closures, Restrictions and Warnings Report.
Queensland Road Conditions
RACQ Road conditions report -- Click on the map to select Queensland. Clicking on that map takes you to a map of the specific region you selected. Red, yellow or green icons show which Outback roads are open or closed, and you can follow the links to more information. Slow to load and cumbersome to navigate, but provides good information. You can also ring 1300 130 595 for road reports.
New South Wales Road Conditions
Live Traffic NSW -- Live updates and traveller information for NSW roads. Click on the symbols on the map to read the warnings and restrictions. (You may need to zoom in if several symbols overlap.) Switching to "Text View" lists all current warnings.
Outback Weather Forecast - Weather Warnings
An open road is no good to you if you get caught out there by a big deluge and can't get back...
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology has a great website. Use it to find out what lies ahead...
Weather and Warnings Information -- Click on the map or use the text links to find weather forecasts and observations, including flood warnings, cyclone threats and cyclone forecast track maps.
Radar Images -- My favourite feature. Select a radar station from the map (scroll down to find map) and see where it is raining and how hard. Shows an animation of the latest 4 images (so you can see where the rain is headed) and is updated in real time.
