Camping in Kakadu during the wet season

by Cindy
(Switzerland)

I am going (with my boyfriend) to be in Kakadu around the 5 December. We wanted to camp because everything is so expensive but you seem to say that it is not the best thing to do. Could it get dangerous with the storms?
I really hope that we will be able to see a few great places in Kakadu. We are going to be there for three days.
Thank you very much for your help!!!

Wet season camping in Kakadu
by: Birgit

Hi Cindy,

I say the wet season is not the best time of the year for camping not because there is anything dangerous about it, but because it is so stinking hot and humid! And because I hear soooo many complaints about that... :-)

You have to decide for yourself if you think you will enjoy it.

What you can expect are the occasional thunderstorm with strong winds, followed by a tropical downpour. You'll have very, very hot days (it could be 40°C and above) and still hot and humid nights, and, especially if it did rain, you'll have kazillions of insects attracted by your lights after dark.

But you may also get to enjoy amazing lightning shows and frog concerts and rich bird and wildlife around your tent.

The wet season is always an adventure and it's impossible to predict if or how much it will rain or what exactly you will find.

If you are up for an adventure and happy to put up with the somewhat uncomfortable aspects of that time of the year, go for it.

Before you go check which campsites, roads and attractions are actually open, so you can plan ahead to make the most of your time.
