Tanami Track

by Craig Holland
(Toronto - Newcastle)

Next year I'm driving from Newcastle to Broome going via the Tanami Track (Rd). I understand that the Rabbit Flat Roadhouse is closing down at the end of 2010. This is going to make travelling this road more challenging.

It will make it important to stock up on fuel at Tilmouth or Yuendumu. I have read that at the other end Balgo has diesel and Billiluna is not ideal to stop at. Are there any other fuel stops available, and where on the Tanami can we stay during our venture?

Tanami Track after Rabbit Flat closure

Hi Craig,

You already know all your options.

Tilmouth Well, Yuendumu, Balgo and Billiluna, that's it. You have no other choices I'm afraid. Better take a tent and some jerry cans!

What are the opportunities to sleep on the Tanami road leaving Alice Springs?

Balgo

Stop at Balgo; its only 30km from the highway and the art centre is AMAZING!

Billiluna is Fine!

There is nothing wrong with Billiluna community and they have fuel nearly always. There are no safety issues in going into the community or Balgo for that matter. Just ring ahead and find out what times and days the store is open and if they have any accommodation available. There are some beautiful camping spots just off the track near the Balgo turnoff (just behind the small ridge) and at Sturt Creek near Billiluna (bitumen section).

Tips for the Tanami

Remember you are on Aboriginal land. You are the wayward white fella. Don't forget to be respectful.
